Custodial death: Police ‘carelessness’ marked Thursday, June 21, 2001

AsianAge
Vadodara, June 20: The custodial death of an undertrial on Tuesday has brought in light utter carelessness on the part of on duty police officials.

The undertrial had committed suicide in the Raopura police station. Noticeably, neither the six prisoners who were in the same custody nor the police officials who were on duty could sense the occurrence of the mishappening. While the commissioner of police has confirmed the death ‘a suicide’ it has raised serious doubt about the alertness of police officials, especially those on the night duty.

Be it Navapura police chowky, Market Chowky or Sayajigunj police station one can easily find the ‘on duty’ police official sleeping comfortably in the office premise after 2 am.

Hundreds evacuated due to reservoir leaks Wednesday, June 20, 2001

Yahoo India
AHMEDABAD (Reuters) - Some 800 people were moved to safety from three villages near Vadodara after heavy monsoon rains damaged a reservoir, officials said on Tuesday.

The reservoir in Pratapura, near Baroda, about 70 km from Ahmedabad developed cracks in its walls late on Monday forcing people in surrounding villages to flee, Baroda district collector Bhagyesh Jha told Reuters.

"The water flow has now been regulated and engineers are working to completely plug the leakage," he said.

There was no loss of life and no report of anybody missing, he said.

Officials said last weekend that some 28 people had been killed during a fortnight of heavy rains which lashed Gujarat, large tracts of which had been gripped by a severe drought for three straight years.

CM heads for Delhi to review bank imbroglio Wednesday, June 20, 2001

AsianAge
Ahmedabad, June 19: Chief minister Keshubhai Patel will leave for New Delhi on Wednesday along with a high-level delegation to meet Union finance minister Yashwant Sinha in an effort to resolve the Madhavpura Mercantile Cooperative Bank imbroglio.

Mr Patel will be accompanied by finance minister Vaju Vala, minister of state for cooperation Raman Vora and top officials of the concerned departments. Mr Vora said the delegation will also meet Union home minister L.K. Advani during its visit.

Speaking to reporters here, Mr Vora said the main demand will be a default guarantee by the Centre and a 10-year interest-free loan equal to the amount the Depositors Insurance Corporation of the RBI to be paid in case of liquidation to help revival of the bank.

Meanwhile, an unprecedented rush was seen at almost all the branches of Visnagar Nagrik Sahakari Bank on Tuesday after there were reports of the RBI declaring the bank as ‘weak’. Depositors thronged branches of the bank from morning and were seen till late night in almost all the branches, including those in Ahmedabad city The bank paid depositors without any hassles.

The bank also paid up to 50 per cent of pre-mature deposits to the account holders. The step taken by the bank to pay the depositors is seen as a move to gain the confidence of its depositors. The RBI regional director, Mr V S Das, said that the bank as on today had no problem with mobilisation of funds.

Minister of state for co-operatives Mr Raman Vora, when contacted said, that they have already given notice for the removal of chairman and managing director of the bank. But as the bank management has gone in high court against the notice, the matter is sub-judiced. However, Mr Vora was not aware about number of branches of bank. He said it is a very small bank and cannot be compared with MMCB.

Meanwhile, the state government called as “inappropriate” the remarks made against chief minister Keshubhai Patel in the Visnagar Nagrik Sahakari Bank report appearing in the vernacular daily Gujarat Samachar on Tuesday. Mr Vora said here on Tuesday that the Visnagar Nagrik Sahkari Bank has been declared as `weak’ but accused the Gujarat Samachar of cooking up chief minister Keshubhai Patel’s involvement.
