Company sells 1000 handsets in four days of launch Sunday, June 3, 2001

Ahmedabad, June 2: Around 1000 portable handsets of WiLL network have already been delivered in just first four days since inauguration of the Network by Union communication minister Tapan Sikdar and chief minister Keshubhai Patel, on May 26.

The WiLL network at present operates through its three base transceiver systems or towers that are situated at Railwaypura, Vastrapur and Naranpura. The network covers around 80 per cent of the area of Ahmedabad that falls under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

“The WiLL network provides two types of services, fixed wireless telephone, which has a range of of five kms and portable handset, which has an indoor range of two kms and outdoor range of five kms,” said the general manager of transmission, Mr Ranjan Datta.

However, Mr Datta also added that, “Our experience shows that the range of fixed wireless telephones can go up to 15 kms and that of portable handsets can go up to seven kms outdoors.”

While commenting on the increasing demand of portable handsets, he said that the total limit of the exchange at present is 5000 connections, and out of that 75 per cent of the connections are given to the subscribers of fixed wireless telephones and the remaining 25 per cent are for the subscribers of portable handsets.

Out of the 75 per cent connections to the subscribers of fixed wireless telephones around 200 connections have already been given and 500 applications are being processed and will be given the connection shortly.

Good results bring bad admission rush Sunday, June 3, 2001

Ahmedabad, June 2: Due to the huge results this year, the city is expected to have more than 6,000 students for admissions as compared to last year. The rush is expected to be felt by the commerce, arts and BBA colleges in the city.

The admissions to these colleges will start from Monday.Rough estimates by the university state that city is expected to get about 1,500 students from outside. Last year, the city colleges accommodated 17,879 students in English and Gujarati medium colleges his year the number of students is expected to be about 21,260.

Man murdered near Sanand Sunday, June 3, 2001

Ahmedabad, June 2: One person was murdered in Sanand and his body was discovered near the railway station on the Viramgam highway Road. The murder occurred between June 1 night and June 2 early morning. The body was discovered by Dilawar Khan Noor Khan Pathan, who is also the complainant.

The dead person has been identified as Chetanbhai T Makhwana, 40, a resident of Radhanpur. An unknown assailant stabbed Makhwana with a sharp weapon on his neck and chest which resulted in his death.

PM to review relief programmes Saturday, June 2, 2001

AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, during his two-day visit to Kutch in Gujarat from June 3, will review the relief and rehabilitation programmes in the worst-affected district in the aftermath of the January 26 earthquake.

The Prime Minister, after his arrival at Bhuj airport on June 3 morning, is scheduled to dedicate a school building constructed by the Bhartiya Jain Sangathan, lay the foundation stone of civil hospital and flag off a train along the Bhuj-Gandhidham section. He will then attend a public meeting, an official release said here Friday.

On Monday, he will have a review meeting with ministers and officials at Bhuj and later inaugurate rehabilitated village adopted by Manav Sadhana of the Sabarmati Ashram. He would also meet women artistes and school children and other affected people at bhachau before leaving for New Delhi.

Union Home Minister L K Advani along with Union Railway Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Minister of State for Rural Development Suhash Maharia would accompany Vajpayee during his visit, the release added. (PTI)

Security beefed up around Somnath temple Saturday, June 2, 2001

GANDHINAGAR: Security has been strengthened around the historic Somnath temple in Junagadh district to stave off any threat to the ancient monument.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of officers presided over by minister of state for home and yatradham Haren Pandya here Thursday in view of the temple's archaeological and historical significance and also for its spiritual value, official sources said.

The security arrangement is a long-term strategy to ward any threat to the historic structure that was destroyed several times by invaders but rebuilt on as many occasions, the sources added.

Accordingly, close circuit TV sets and monitoring arrangement would be made in the temple, SRP jawans would be deployed and the entrance would be fitted with metal detector.

Besides the Somnath temple, security would be provided at several other temples and religious places in the state, an official statement said. (PTI)
