What is Panchang?

The Hindu calendar is known by the name of the Panchang, which means the five members, because it contains five leading subjects to wit:

1. The age of the moon in the month;
2. The constellation near which the moon is situated on each particular day;
3. The day of the week;
4. The eclipses;
5. The positions of the planets.

Panchang has been in use for centuries.This calendar covers everything from the phases of the moon, the positions of the stars & planets, and identifies auspicious time & day for various activities.

An important function of Panchang is to help calculate muhurath.

Muhurath is a listing of auspicious days and times to undertake important activities in either personal life or business.

Auspicious and inauspicious days are also indicated; those, for instance, on which a person may travel towards one of the four cardinal points; for any one who could safely travel to-day towards the north would probably be overtaken by misfortune if he attempted to journey to the south dapoxetine .

This almanac is an absolute necessity for every purohita, since it tells him not only which are the auspicious constellations and, fortunate or unfortunate days, but also which are the propitious hours in each day; for it is only at these particular moments that the ceremonies is called on to preside can begin.

The Brahmins also draw inspiration from this book in predicting happy and unhappy events in life.
Princes and persons of the highest rank, believe in it even more firmly. There is no one in high position who has not one or more official purohitas living in his palace; and these men act, so to speak, like rulers of the universe. They go every morning and announce to the prince, to his state elephant, and to his idols, in turn, all that is written in the almanac relating to that particular day. Accordingly, the prince even postponed his wish to hunt, walk, or even receive visits from strangers.

In large temples a purohita is specially retained to read to the idols every morning the predictions contained in the almanac for that day.

According to the panchang there are sixty years, each having a name. The name also has a special meaning and, suggests what is in store for us in that year.

On the new year's day, the Panchang is read to learn about what the ensuing year has in store for us . The Panchang essentially consists of five parts of a day, viz. , the name of the day, the tithi of the day,the star of the day,the yogam of the day, and the karanam of the day.

Starting any new venture on the appropriate tithi will fetch Aishwaryam (lots of wealth and prosperity) for the person. Similarly , any deed done on the right day of the week will enhance the longevity,i.e the life span of the person.
Any deed done on a day with a good and beneficial star will alleviate the papams(ill effects because of ill deeds).
Good and beneficial yogam will help all diseases to disappear.
Lastly, a deed done during the good and beneficial karanam will help the person to achieve the objective of the deed without any hurdles and impediments.
