Minister of state for home ‘plays’ super cop, raids gambling dens Sunday, June 3, 2001

AsianAge
Ahmedabad, June 2: Minister of state for home Haren Pandya played a cop on Friday night and accompanied the local police on raids to various gambling dens in Karanj, Gomtipur and Meghaninagar areas.

He said he had accompanied the police because he had received many complaints about rampant gambling in various areas of the city. In all, the police arrested 126 people and recovered Rs 40,410.

The Prevention of Crime Branch conducted raids simultaneously at various places. Among those caught are Faizalkhan Pathan, Raju Parikh and Indravadan Bhatia who were running a gambling joint under Nehru Bridge in the house of one Annu miya.

It may be recalled that former minister of state for home Mr Mahendra Trivedi began the trend of
accompanying police for various raids in 1995. However, it was later revealed by police officers themselves that this had not made any concrete difference in curbing the illegal liquor or gambling business in the city.

Mr Haren Pandya, when asked about the need for him to accompany police on raids, simply said that he had gone because he received too many complaints. When asked whether he had any concrete plans to check gambling in the city, the minister refused to comment.
