Man wanted for over 50 offences arrested near New Cloth Market Friday, June 29, 2001

Ahmedabad, June 28: Mukhtiar Ahmed alias Kaliyo Nasir Ahmed Shaikh, who is wanted in over 50 offences, was apprehended by the police near the New Cloth Market gate on Thursday afternoon.
According to initial investigation reports, a police party headed by sub inspector Makhusinh Gabhasinh was doing routine checking of the vehicles near the New Cloth Market gate, when an auto-rickshaw coming from Sarangpur tried to get away by waving at the police party saying that there was an emergency.
But police became suspicious and stopped the vehicle and asked the passenger to get down. He got down and suddenly pulled a revolver from under his belt and tried to threaten the police. But it failed to scare the police and constable Raju Raghunath threw his note pad, which he had in his hand, at the face of the man. Another police constable Uday Ramarao then hit him with a stick and flustered the man.
He started running away but the police chased him and he fired one round from his revolver to keep them away. Still the police kept chasing him and he fired another round. But finally the man was caught and disarmed by the police.
He was then taken to the police station, where his initial interrogation revealed that he was a notorious criminal Mukhtiar Shaikh, a resident of Kalandari Masjid Chhapra, Rakhial. He admitted that he had robbed police revolver from the Railway police station near Kalupur police station on Tuesday.
The revolver belongs to police sub inspector R U Solanki, who is currently serving as a police reader at Railway police force. His revolver was stolen while he was sleeping at the Railway police station after he his duty hours. A complaint to this effect was filed at the Kalupur police station, which is investigating further.
