9 out of 10 clear HSCE general Saturday, June 2, 2001

Ahmedabad, June 1: A whopping 89.39 per cent candidates successfully cleared the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (general) held by the Gujarat Secondary Education Board in April-May 2001. Amdavadi candidates overshadowed toppers from other centres – as many as 15 Amdavadi HSCE (general) students – ranked in the state merit list, which was declared by the GSEB on Friday. Even state topper Chirangi Shah who secured 92.17 per cent, is from Ahmedabad.

It is important to note that the result has broken the record in 14 years, and it is only since the last three academic sessions that the success rate of the candidates have gone up to 80 and more. Among 2,68,966 candidates who appeared in the HSCE (general) in April-May 2001, 2,40,432 passed the examination.

The success rate of commerce and arts students combined is as high as 89.15 per cent. About 2,30,578 students passed the subjects successfully. Sola Road topped the list with maximum number of success rate of 97.61 per cent, while Una examination centre had the poorest performance with 72.55 per cent success, informed GSEB chairman P.V. Trivedi.

Education minister Anandiben Patel who was in the city to announce the results, formally declared the HSCE (general) results through the Internet site at 11 am. About 18,66,100 students expecting their results accessed the site, during the first 10 minutes after declaration of the results.

“A whopping 1,09,193 girl candidates passed the HSCE examinations (commerce, arts, vocational course and basic education) in 2000-01, as against 1,31,238 boys who appeared in the exams,” she informed. “Girls have been doing exceptionally well in the academics,” said the minister adding, “the state topper is a girl too.” She expressed deep satisfaction over the overwhelming success of girls in academics over the last few years, and added, “It is a matter of pride since I am a woman too.”

The success rates of centres across Ahmedabad was remarkable - 88.87 per cent students passed from Asarva, 86.61 from Ashram Road, 86.77 per cent from Ahmedabad (east), 91.20 from Ellisbridge, 81.50 per cent from Ahmedabad (Kot Area), 90.03 from Naroda, 88.49 from Delhi Chalka, 81.41 per cent from Vasna, 89.47 from Maninagar, 87.69 from Naranpura, 86.77 per cent from Bapu Nagar, 91.67 per cent from Ghatlodia, 81.34 from Raipur and 87.12 from Sabarmati, respectively.

GSEB revealed that as many as 166 cases of copying were found during the exams, but failed to provide the details of the investigation initiated by the board to check the malpractice in future. Meanwhile, the class X board examination results would be declared after June 8.
