Brothers call on woman prisoners Tuesday, August 7, 2001

AHMEDABAD: It was not just another day at the Sabarmati Central Jail on Saturday where visitors came to meet their imprisoned relatives. At 8 am, more than 3,500 women anxiously waited at the fountain just outside the main entrance of the Jail. As the loudspeaker announced the name "Laxmanbhai Parmar", among the many who ran was a woman with a lot of expectation in her eyes. She was Laxman's sister who had come to tie 'rakhi' on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
While almost all of 2,346 prisoners, undergoing punishments for various offences at Sabarmati Jail, met their sisters who came to tie rakhi, some women prisoners (out of the total of 45) were also lucky to have their brothers visiting them for the occasion.
The jail authorities had made adequate arrangements for the occasion allowing the sisters to meet their brothers on the auspicious day. The yard, just beyond the second barrier, was the venue for the occasion. On the left side gathered the undertrials, while on the right were the pucca quaidis.
The event which continued till 2:30 pm in the evening was marked by various anxious moments, with some prisoners eagerly having their eyes fixed on to the gate. On the other side, the sisters gave a patient hearing to the loudspeaker announcing names of the prisoners by turn.
As a set of names were announced, a batch of women ran in a jubilant mood, trying to make way through the small entrance on the main iron-gate of the prison.
"This is a event which every prisoner looks forward to every year when they meet their sisters," said jailor A B Makwana.
Laxman Parmar, who is serving term for committing a murder, was extraordinarily happy. "It just reminds me that I am not all that discarded by the society," he said with a sparkle in his eyes. Although his family has severed ties with him, his sister has continued with the ritual which she began 40 years ago. She has never missed tying the thread for all these years.
