Single-window clearance at AMC Saturday, December 8, 2001

AHMEDABAD: Twenty blue-prints for construction and reconstruction of buildings in the west municipal zone of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation were given the nod at one go on Friday.
A plan mooted about 45 days back by the deputy commissioner of west zone, J G Hingrajia, has seen lengthy bureaucratic procedures cut down, proving to be a boon for those seeking to construct new buildings. Of the 30 building plans perused on Friday, 20 were cleared with immediate effect while the remaining is expected to be given the nod soon.
Hingrajia told TNN: "The system was developed to help commoners, who usually constitute 80 per cent of the total number of applicants, get their job done without any delay. Senior officials from the Central office of AMC along with the Town Development Officer and his deputies and the deputy commissioner hold a 'lok durbar' in which commoners are invited to table their plans, furnish all relevant documents and information and go back home with AMC's green signal."
Till date, the west zone office of AMC has cleared about 130 building plans in this fashion. A similar system of 'lok durbar' started by Hingrajia in the tax department raked in lakhs in lieu of pending property tax cases. Effectiveness of this system has now appealed to the top brass of AMC and sources point out that similar single-window clearance through public meetings will soon begin in the other four zones of AMC.
