AHMEDABAD: The BJP on Friday sprang a surprise naming Upendra Trivedi, the present deputy speaker in the Gujarat Assembly, as its candidate for the Sabarkantha Lok Sabha by election.
Trivedi, a well-known Gujarati film actor who represents the Bhiloda assembly seat in Sabarkantha district, will file his nomination papers on Saturday at Himmatnagar.
The Congress will finalise by Saturday names of its candidates for by-elections to the Sabarkantha Lok Sabha constituency and Sabarmati assembly seat to be held in Gujarat on September 20, GPCC president Amarsinh Chaudhary said on Friday. "We have recommended a few names to the Congress high command. I had even discussed them (the names) with the senior party leaders in Delhi. The names of the candidates, therefore, should be announced by the Congress high command tomorrow," he said.
Asked who were the probable candidates, he said, "For Sabarmati seat, we have recommended the name of Narhari Amin, former deputy chief minister who had once won from there."
Chaudhary said three names _ Tushar Chaudhary (son of Amarsinh Chaudhary), Haribhai Chaudhary and Madusudhan Mistry, a close confidant of Shankarsinh Vaghela _ have been sent for the Sabarkantha seat.
Sabarkantha Lok Sabha constituency was represented by Congress party's Nishaben Chaudhary who died earlier this year.
The Sabarmati assembly seat was won by BJP's Yatin Oza, defeating Narhari Amin of Congress in 1998 elections. However, following differences with state party leadership, Oza quit as legislator and also from the primary membership of the BJP.
Meanwhile, chairman of Gujarat Dairy Development Corporation (GDDC) and the BJP candidate for the assembly by-election to Sabarmati seat, Babubhai Jamnadas Patel, filed his nomination papers on Friday.
The last date for filing of nominations is September 3.
