Ahmedabad, June 4: The process of installing the fire safety system has not been initiated in the regional office of the Tariff Advisory Committee, which controls major tariff like fire, motor, marine and engineering.
Situated in a nine-storied B.D. Patel House near Sardar Patel stadium, the 12-year-old building has no fire safety system since its inception and has not even obtained the mandatory building use permission.
It may be noted that the high court notification to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority to install fire safety systems in all the high-rise buildings under their jurisdiction was given in June 2000.
It has been 11 months since AMC and Auda officials have been stalling installation of systems as per the court orders by promising that it would be done in stages.
When contacted by The Asian Age, municipal commissioner K. Kailashanathan refused to comment on how long it will take the AMC to ensure fire safety system in all the buildings. All he said was, “I don’t want to make any statement. It is a sub-judice matter and I will answer that in the court.”
In absence of the manager in-charge, M.M. Bhuskute of the tariff advisory committee, assistant manager P.K. Roy Chaudhry told The Asian Age, “It is not our responsibility to install the fire safety system.” He however admitted that the B.D. Estate Trust had not even begun the procedure. “It is essential to have the fire systems but we cannot help it.
The power to install fire system lies with the AMC,” he added. It should be noted that in spite of the order from high court to the 418 high-rise buildings in the city, only 32 buildings have installed complete fire safety system while in another ten buildings the procedure is on.
Urban development minister Parmanad Khattar told The Asian Age, “I promise that all the buildings will have fire safety systems in six months time. We will punish the owners who fail to do so.”
It should be noted that a total of 15 government buildings in the city still do not have fire safety systems. A statutory body under the Union ministry of finance, the tariff advisory committee controls major tariffs, provides guidance to all the industries of the state about the safety devices and its importance.
