Mayor, officials return from ‘study tour’ Sunday, May 20, 2001
Ahmedabad, May 19: The mayor along with a team of city elders came back from Honolulu on Saturday after attending the Mayor’s Asia-Pacific Environmental Summit.
On their way back, the team visited Los Angles, Washington, New York and London and studied various developmental projects there. The agreement of feasibility study for the Rs 50 lakh grant for proper disposal of 8.5 crore gallons of dirty water will be signed in the city on May 29.
About 400 delegates from 28 countries including delegates from 20 states of India attended the summit. Issues like giving basic infrastructural facilities to the poor and the weaker section of the society, water and drainage system and solid waste management were also discussed.
The problem of pollution and the involvement of municipalities and municipal corporations in this was also discussed. The role of citizens in the overall development and proper working of the city and its administration were also discussed. The need for awareness among the citizens on all the civic issues was emphasised.
The need for a cost-benefit analysis and the financial constraints and other challenges faced by the developing countries were also discussed. The need for proper use of electricity and other resources and proper management of the available resources was highlighted. It was felt the cultural identity of the city should not be lost on its way to development.
It was noted that about 75 per cent of the poor in the world live in Asian countries and about 5 crore citizens live below the poverty line. It was decided that lack of infrastructural facilities including water, health and sanitation meant that the citizens did not lead an optimum civic life.
This leads to lack of progress, both economic and social and the city chokes under its own problems. Therefore there is a need to take up the challenge of clean and pollution free city.
The need to set up entertainment centres in the city was also felt.
