Gujarat University's executive council meet expected to be stormy Wednesday, August 8, 2001
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat University can expect the Executive Council meeting on Tuesday to be a stormy affair with affiliation to 18 colleges out of the 30 applications coming up for discussion.
Sources in the university said the need committee has not given an approval to a number of established institutions, and the officials may have to face the ire of the likes of former deputy chief minister Narhari Amin and advocate Sudhir Nanavati. It has refused approval saying there is no need for a college in the geographical locations they have been applied for.
Among the prominent institutions not given approval are St Xavier's College which applied for a BCA course, Asia Education Trust and Lokhandwala Education Trust.
Various institutions have applied to the university for starting courses like MBA, MCA, BBA, BCA, self-financed commerce colleges and bachelor in physiotherapy. If the Executive Council gives its stamp of approval, these applications will be referred to the Academic Council which in turn will refer it back to the Executive Council for the final clearance.
Vice-chancellor Naresh Ved on the other hand has said that he wants to make this entire controversy a one-time affair. "This is an ideal situation for us to work out the exact modalities for starting new colleges and affiliating them," he said. "Once we go through this tardy process, the future officials of the university will not have to face such problems." Ved has also decided to strictly enforce the Gujarat University Act, whether it pleased the fighting factions in the Executive Council or not.News Source : Times Of India News Service [ Lightning News ]
