Ahmedabad, June 30: Deputy commissioner of police V.M. Parghi said that his men had resorted to laathi charge because the students were breaking public property and resorting to violence. Unrest in the university has been brewing since the HSCE results have been released and this time the results have been phenomenal, many students and their parents are anxious because they are not sure about getting admissions in the city colleges.
Policemen laathi charged the students as they gathered to protest against the admission policy. Students broke windowpanes and chairs to protest against the whole situation. Later they even stopped an AMTS bus and broke its windows and damaged the bus.
Mr Parghi said that Gujarat University is not able to function without police protection and top officials like the vice-chancellor, pro vice-chancellor and the registrar refuse to come to the university tower without a police escort. “Vice-chancellor Naresh Ved refuses to even live in his residence without police protection,” Mr Parghi added.
Mr Parghi said that since the past few days he has stationed one police inspector, three sub inspectors and 15 police constables at the university tower and yet the university officials are asking for more force there.
The situation was tense since student leaders and student organisations were agitating for more seats in various colleges so that more students can be accommodated. On Friday, students had even resorted to violence at L.J. Commerce College, Vastrapur, and broke furniture and windowpanes there too.News Source : The AsianAge Ahmedabad Edition [ The coolest Newspaper for city ]
