24-hr control room to meet crisis Sunday, May 27, 2001

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation started a 24-hour control room at AMC central office and Tagore Hall on Saturday to meet the cyclone crisis. Talking to the media, municipal commissioner K. Kailashnathan said that this control room will function till Monday.
All the employees of the engineering, health and fire department have been asked to work during the weekend. The equipment at the control room includes 16 fire tenders with pumps, which will be used for de-watering in the west and south zones.
According to Mr Kailashnathan, AMC has identified the water logging sites and have accordingly made the arrangements. The commissioner also said that if water logging takes place in the Akhbarnagar underpass, it will be closed till water is removed.
Four submersible pumps will be placed here for dewatering in the monsoon. The AMC has also hired a crane of 50-tonne capacity from ONGC for three days. The control room at Tagore Hall will have four Hitachi Pokland to remove debris, two wheel dozers and three JCB machines.
All the municipal hospitals are also prepared with full staff and extra beds to meet the crisis. Arrangements have also been made in the Kamla Nehru Zoo in Kankaria to in the wake of cyclone. According to Zoo superintendent R.K. Sahoo, since the animals are most sensitive to natural calamities it is essential to make proper security arrangements from them.
“We have our tranquiliser gun ready to stop the animal from running errant.” Arrangements have also been made to meet the situation if any enclosures of the endangered species collapse and animals are caught in the cage, Mr Sahu added. “Emergency kits with required medicines are ready.
