Protesting GU students turn violent, break public property Sunday, July 1, 2001

Ahmedabad, June 30
Students protesting the low results of TY BSc, chemistry, the admission issues and the problems of L.D Engineering college were laathi charged in the university here on Saturday.

The two student unions, ABVP and NSUI had announced parallel agitation programmes at the university for these issues and had wanted to meet the pro-vice chancellor, Chaitanay Khambholja, the registrar and the controller of exams.

The tension started building up in the premises at about one o’clock in the afternoon, as the police did not let the students enter the gates. While a group of about 25 students had gone to make a presentation to the Pro V-C who was not on the premises, the other students were kept waiting outside by the security, who had kept the entrance jaali closed for security reasons.

The police opened the jaali after the reinforcements came in form of additional security in three police vans. According to the student leaders, the police opened the jaali, let them in and then closed the jaali and then laathi charged the students.

Both the NSUI and the ABVP leaders say that the police and SRP jawans closed the avenues for the students to escape and then hit out at them without even issuing any warning to them.

The students ran around and tried to mingle with about 100 students who were seeking eligibility and migration certificates, but the police laathi charged those students alongwith the protesting students.

Four student leaders from the ABVP, Shailesh Parikh, Jaswant Gohil, Chandresh Vyas and Bhargav Thaker were injured while Shailesh Parikh was arrested and taken to the police station.

The enraged students then went on rampage and broke university doors, windows and furniture and attempted to set an AMTS bus on fire. Both the student’s organisations have decided to hold protests against the “improper” police action on Monday.
