HMEDABAD: Metropolitan court magistrate PU Patel on Saturday remanded parents of 19-year-old Bharti Barot, who committed suicide on Thursday, and the Hindu Mahasabha worker in police custody till Monday.
The Khadia police had lodged offences of abetment to suicide and conspiracy under sections 306 and 114 of the IPC against parents Kantaben and Kanubhai and the Gujarat Hindu Mahasabha worker, Dashrath Zinzuwadia, on Friday, in the suicide case.
The police had requested for a seven-day remand but the Metropolitan court magistrate granted remand for two days.
It needs mention here that Bharti had runaway from home on July 11 and got married to Salim in a mosque at Juhapura after converting to Islam, thus being re-christened Firdaus Bano.
On August 6, a woman advocate brought Bharti to Sabarmati police station to have her statement recorded. She claimed that she had gone with Salim of her own will and there was no use of force.
Later, Bharti's parents, Kantaben and Kanubhai, reportedly brought her from the Nari Sanrakshan Gruh, Odhav, to the Mahasabha premises to process her divorce from Salim Gulammohammad Shaikh (22), whom she had married against their consent, and get her re-married to another boy as per Hindu rites. It is here that Bharti committed suicide by setting herself on fire.
Meanwhile, the police are investigating how the parents were able to get Bharti to the Mahasabha from the women protection home in Odhav. Also under investigation is Bharti's mother claim that her daughter had called her from Odhav and expressed her desire to return.
