ISKCON all set for Janmashtami fete Friday, August 10, 2001

TIMES NEWS NETWORK
AHMEDABAD: Elaborate arrangements have been made by the city unit of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) at the Radha Govind Dham on Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway for Janmashtami celebrations.

Rituals for the celebration, to be held on August 12, will start from 4.30 am and continue upto midnight. At 7.30 am, amidst holy chants, a discourse from Bhagvad Gita has been scheduled soon after Shringar darshan and arti.

The evening rituals at the ISKCON will be attended by the Governor Sundersingh Bhandari, state minister for home Haren Pandya and mayor of Ahmedabad Himmatsinh Patel. Soon after the guests' departure, Mahavishnu Swami will speak on Krishna's birth and childhood days. Thereafter, midnight will be time for maha aarti and kirtan.

On August 13, ISKCON devotees will celebrate the birth anniversary of Swami Prabhupada. The celebrations also include Vyas Puja marking the spread of Krishna consciousness through Sanatan dharma.

President of ISKCON, Vadodara, Swami Basu Ghoshdas who returned from an overseas visit _ on popularisation of Sanskrit in places like Ukraine, England and USA _ spoke about the Oxford Centre for Vaishnav-Hindu Studies.

He said: "Though it is more than apparent that the West is running after material pleasures and spending more and more on temporary gratification, the centre for Vaishnav studies at Oxford University, is a revelation. I know of three persons who are researching on Vaishnavism at a time when even back home we have very few who are interested enough to dwell into the religious and cultural history of India. ISKCON has many centres world over which put commoners on the right track, one that shows how to lead a simple and happy life."
