Rickshaw strike: AMTS introduces 8 new buses Saturday, June 2, 2001

Ahmedabad, June 1: The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service began plying eight new buses to ease the inconvenience caused to the commuters by shuttle drivers’ strike. These buses were put to service on Sahibaug, Akhbarnagar and other busy routes where raids were conducted on the shuttle rickshaws.
The AMTS, which earned Rs 6 lakhs through drive, has planned to lease another hundred buses to tackle the commuters rush.
Mr Z.A. Sacha, AMTS general manager told The Asian Age that the talks are on with state transport department to hire more buses as the checking will continue for the whole month.
Mr Sacha further told that AMTS had divided the city into 16 zones to carry out the drive and they identified the 200,300,90/6,400,500 and 150 as the busiest routes. He said that leased bus would be put to service on these busy routes. Mr Sacha said, “Till date traffic police has booked more than 1200 rickshaws under this drive.”
Giving figures area wise he said there were 600 bookings in Memko, 300 in Sahibaug and 300 in Akbarnagar. Supporting the drive he said that they are getting support from all sections including auto unions.News Source : The AsianAge Ahmedabad Edition [ The coolest Newspaper for city ]
