Smoking ban put into effect Thursday, December 6, 2001

AHMEDABAD: Police Commissioner P C Pande finally issued a notification banning smoking in seven places including educational institutions designated by the apex court. Those found violating the order would be arrested under section 188 of the CrPC.

The notification dated December 3, states that smoking of tobacco would be banned from public and private cinema halls and auditoria, public hospital buildings, public health institutions, public and private educational institutions, public libraries, government and semi-government office buildings, public transports like ST buses, city buses and railway stations.

As per the orders, boards depicting 'No-Smoking Area' are to be displayed in such places while 'Smoking Zone' areas are to be allocated for the habitual smokers within 30 days of the issue of the notification.
