Bedlam at VC’s office, students turn violent Thursday, June 7, 2001

Ahmedabad, June 6: The fourth day of admission to various colleges of the Gujarat University was marked by a strong protests by students who failed to get a seat at colleges offering Commerce, Arts and BBA cources.

The protest led by National Students Union of India along with the agitated candidates turned violent when they barged into vice chancellor Dr Naresh Ved’s chamber on Wednesday and created a scene at his office by breaking furniture.

Security personnel had to resort to lathi charge to dispersed the protesters, who sought answers to lack of adequate seating arrangements made by the Gujarat University in wake of the whooping HSCE (science) and HSCE (general) results.

In wake of high cut off point of HSCE percentage by various colleges of the university, several students are finding it difficult to get a seat for themselves in any of the colleges. The minimum 60 per cent requirement by a candidate being eligibility criteria in colleges has caused the present crisis.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat University gave out admissions to as many as 13,050 students by the end of the fourth day of degree admission in various commerce colleges. Another 5,925 students have been admitted to science colleges while BBA colleges have admitted 840 students.

A press release issued by the Gujarat University later in the day stated that the admission procedures would not be closed till all the candidates are accommodated in the colleges.
