City transporters go on strike Thursday, December 6, 2001

AHMEDABAD: Transporters in the city went on a strike on Wednesday following a surprise raid carried out by senior AMC officials at Aslali octroi check-post.

The raid resulted in four persons being arrested on Tuesday, whom the AMC's octroi department officials termed as middlemen working in cahoots with transport companies aiding them in evading octroi duty.

Members of the Ahmedabad Motor Transporters' Association in turn alleged that this was far from truth. Association president Chandrashekhar Joshi told TNN: "Those accused of acting as middlemen were in fact helping out members of the association to avoid harassment by octroi department employees. We are not at fault, and the strike will continue to paralyse economic activity in the city till the case filed against the four is withdrawn along with an unconditional apology."
