NGO to rebuild quake-hit municipal school Monday, October 15, 2001

TIMES NEWS NETWORK
AHMEDABAD: Gujarati Shala No. 1 in Keshavnagar is just one among the over 100 municipal schools to be severely damaged in the January 26 earthquake, and yet is unique.

Unique because its reconstruction is not proving to be a draw on the already strained purse-strings of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

The local chapter of Round Table India, Ahmedabad Round Table Number 40, has taken it upon itself to rebuild the quake-damaged building with self-generated fund of Rs 45 lakh.

Round Table is an apolitical organisation offering those willing, aged between 18 to 40 years, an opportunity to serve their communities by stimulating interest in public welfare.

The NGO under its ongoing 'Freedom Through Education' project has built more than 300 schools, touching lives of over three lakh students.

Round Table expects to enhance its number of all-India "young" beneficiaries to 10 lakh, through expenditure on this front to the tune of Rs 35 crore, within 2005.

The NGO also proposes to rebuild quake-affected schools in Bhuj, and Vadodara and Surendranagar districts. The chairman of ART, Anand Jagtiani, said a total number of 25 schools built in Gujarat at a cost of Rs 2 crore will benefit 4,300 students.
