Ahmedabad, June 4: Police officials were forced to fire three rounds in the air to disperse a mob which had beaten up a home guard at the Civil Hospital on Sunday night at around 10.30 pm.
According to Shahibaug second police inspector D.R. Raol, the home guard, who was on duty near the vehicle stand at the back entrance of the Civil Hospital, saw a man trying to open various scooters with one key. Assuming that the man was trying to steal a vehicle, the guard confronted him.
A crowd gathered and about 20-25 people ganged up against the home guard man and started beating him up. Sensing that he was outnumbered, the home guard ran towards the nearby police guard room, which is where the police houses the prisoners brought for treatment to the Civil Hospital.
Normally, the guard room has around six constables on guard but only one on sentry duty. The constable on sentry duty tried to save the home guard constable but this enraged the mob, which had followed the home guard constable to the guard room. The mob attacked the police on sentry duty and started beating him up.
To get things under control, the police fired three rounds in the air. Meanwhile, Shahibaug police has registered a complaint against the mob under Section 307, 147, 148, 332, 397 of the IPC and Section 135 of the Bombay Police Act for rioting and attempt to murder.
The home guard constable was not severely injured and he received outdoor treatment at the Civil Hospital while one of the police constables on guard duty was admitted to the hospital.
