BJP turns the heat on mayor Tuesday, November 27, 2001

AHMEDABAD: Shouts of pani aapo... pani aapo.... resounded in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday as over 200 people from Maheshwarinagar and Arbudanagar raised slogans against the Congress and demanded the mayor's resignation.
Water scarcity, coupled with mayor Himmatsinh Patel's assertion (that he would resign if he could not address within 24 hours citizens' complaints about water, gutter and drainage) had sparked this impromptu politicised water-rally to AMC.
Dashing earthen pots to the ground and beating their chest to grieve for not getting water for many days the rallyists led by BJP corporators Amit Shah and Mayur Dave stormed into the standing committee chairman Badruddin Sheikh's chamber.
While the womenfolk shouted for water the BJP leaders backed other rallyists in demanding the mayor's resignation. "In the last general board meeting the mayor had asserted that he would resign if the citizens' woes were not mitigated. So these people are right in demanding Patel's resignation," said a member of the saffron brigade.
A senior BJP leader had asserted that such protests could become routine to turn tables on the mayor who 'had made the statement for publicity'.
The mayor on the other hand told TNN: The agitationists are not getting water as their houses do not have building use permission. I have spoken to the municipal commissioner and we are looking into the modalities on resolving the issue."
Justifying mayor's statement, standing committee member Jayantilal Parmar said, "The mayor made the statement to ensure that the administrative wing is put under pressure to settle people's civic grievances promptly."News Source : The Times of India [India's best Newspaper]
