Ahmedabad, June 10: The leader of the Siksha Yatra that reached the city on Sunday, Mr Kailash Satyarthi, demanded from government to levy education tax on multinational corporations and big industrial houses.
While addressing a press conference, Mr Satyarthi said, “This step would solve the problem of requisite funds for ensuring free, compulsory, uniform and quality education for all.”
He said the Centre could lobby with developed countries and multilateral bodies to waive some amount from India’s debt repayment dues, which can then be used for educating poor masses of India.
“This is feasible going by the instances of developing countries that have applied this method. The only thing needed is pro-active measure,” Mr Satyarthi said. The 12,000-km, 115-days Siksha yatra reached Ahmedabad on Sunday.
On reaching here, Siksha yatris took out a rally from Gandhi Ashram to Income Tax office in which film personalities Mahesh Bhatt and Gulshan Grover also participated.
While speaking to the media, Gulshan Grover said, “It is very unfortunate for our country that not a single leader or parliamentarian has raised a voice against the atrocities on children living below the poverty line, who are forced to work as labourers.”
He further said, “I was under the impression that I am the greatest villain, but the real and the most dreaded villains are present in the society today who are responsible for the plight of these children.”
Bhatt, who was also present at the rally, said, “The government should ensure that the son of a wealthy and poor man study under the same roof. But, I think this dream won’t be fulfilled in my lifetime.”
The yatra would move ahead from Ahmedabad on June 11 at 8 am and state education minister Anandiben Patel will flag off the rally. Gulshan Grover and Mahesh Bhatt would also attend this rally.News Source : The AsianAge Ahmedabad Edition [ The coolest Newspaper for city ]
