Narendra Modi nominated as Gujarat CM Wednesday, October 3, 2001

Wednesday, October 3, 2001 (Ahmedabad): Narendra Modi will be the new Chief Minister of Gujarat. Earlier today Mr Keshubhai Patel announced Mr. Modi as his successor. Mr Modi will now be formally nominated at a meeting of the state legislative party tomorrow.
Mr Patel, who submitted his resignation yesterday met 28 MLAs at his residence in Gandhinagar late last night and said that he would not go against the party. Mr Patel is also expected to give in his resignation to the governor later today.
The Central party leadership are in Ahmedabad to try and smoothen the path for Mr Narendra Modi's becoming the next Chief Minister of Gujarat. There has been some dissention among a section of MLAs in Gujarat who are unwilling to accept his leadership.
