Valsad :: RFO of Bulsar forest range suspended Thursday, December 13, 2001

GANDHINAGAR: Minister of State for Forest Daulatbhai Desai on Tuesday ordered the suspension of three forest department officials, including RFO K C Patel from the Bulsar forest range, in connection with the alleged selling of kherwood worth Rs 27 lakh kept for auction by the department.

While speaking to reporters here, the minister said that acting on a tip-off received from the department, he had sent a team of senior officials to the Velvach forest in Bulsar district. Investigations revealed that the staff had in connivance with smugglers sold kherwood worth Rs 27 lakh.

In all 7,000 tree trunks were to be sold through auction by the department, but the staff sold only 3,000 trunks and the remaining 4,000 were disposed off clandestinely to the smugglers.

The state's principal conservator of Forest was asked by the minister to take stern action against those found guilty. Accordingly, K C Patel, RFO, M V Patel and C J Patel have been placed under suspension pending a departmental inquiry against them.

Desai said that a campaign against kherwood smugglers has been undertaken by the government and it was committed to conserving the forests.
