Bhavnagar :: Candidate attacked in Bhavnagar Thursday, December 6, 2001

RAJKOT: One more case of poll-related violence was reported from the region on Wednesday even as reports of withdrawal of nomination forms began to trickle in.
A candidate belonging to the Soni community, who is contesting the gram panchayat elections from Zamrala in Bhavnagar was attacked by a group of four persons with pipes and sharp weapons. The assailants were demanding that he withdraw his nomination.
According to Bhavnagar police control, the candidate, Vinodrai Jayantilal Dholakiya, was contesting from ward No 8. The assailants, were identified as Hadhba Darbar, Jagubha Darbar, Alkhuba Darbar and Rajubha Darbar.
They also took away gold coins worth Rs 55,000 which Dholakiya was carrying at the time of the attack. He has been shifted to Botad civil hospital.
According to the police, Dholakiya was pitted against one of the assailants, Jaghubha Darbar.
The attack on Dholakiya came days after a Congress candidate, Lakhiben Odedara, was assaulted by four persons at Bakhrala village in Porbander district.
Meanwhile, reports coming from various parts of Rajkot district revealed that 324 nomination forms for the posts of members and 90 for the post of sarpanch, have been rejected by the returning officers till Wednesday evening.
Out of the 3,535 gram panchayats in Saurashtra, as many as 856 have selected their members uncontested. While the first day for withdrawal of forms did not see much rush, Thursday, the last date, is likely to see more action.
