Palanpur :: Jail-break in Palanpur, 4 flee Sunday, December 16, 2001

SOURCE - TIMES NEWS NETWORK
AHMEDABAD: Four inmates of Palanpur sub-jail in Banaskantha district made an easy escape from its premises in the wee hours of Friday.

According to Palanpur police, the four inmates escaped from the jail after breaking open the ventilator of the barrack around 4 o'clock in the morning.

The four inmates began their activity around 1 am and removed the glass slabs and the iron rods fitted in the ventilator by 4 am. Thereafter, the inmates jumped outside into the courtyard from ventilation and scaled the courtyard wall without any hassle from the guards on duty.

The runaway inmates have been identified as Dinno alias Dinesh Gopal Singh Harijan from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Ramesh Singh alias Goliyo from Banskantha, Ganpat alias Gova Garoda and Hastaram Karnaram Vazir from Tharad. While the four inmates made their escape the other six inmates were in deep slumber during the entire incident.

"There were 10 inmates in the same barrack from where four inmates broke open the ventilation," J R Taral, in-charge jail superintendent told TNN on phone adding that none of the remaining six inmates tried to flee along with them.

According to him preliminary interrogation of the six inmates revealed nothing substantial to unravel the modus operandi undertaken by the four runaway inmates.

Taral added that the jail break took place when the local police were in charge of the jail premises. "The jail had 25 barracks housing 224 inmates and the staff takes charge of the jail from day break to sun set," Taral said, adding that the local police takes charge of jail security during night. Police have registered a case and investigating into the matter.
In Gandhinagar , high-ranking officials had the customary meeting after the incident and spoke , quite expectedly , about better security arrangements at jails across the state.
