Can satellites help predict an earthquake? Friday, December 14, 2001
SOURCE - TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Can satellites help predict an earthquake? Though earthquake prediction is not possible, remote sensing experts believe that satellite data can be used to map strain accumulation on earth, which may eventually contribute to a capability for predicting earthquakes.
National Remote Sensing Agency director RR Navalgund while speaking on 'Earth observation systems in disaster management', said that "Precise geodetic positioning based on laser ranging, very long baseline interferometry and more recently the global positioning system (GPS) can be used to map strain accumulation, which may eventually contribute to the capability for predicting earthquakes."
"Space systems from their vantage position in space have over the years demonstrated their capability in providing vital information and services in different aspects of disaster management" he added.
The earth observation satellites provide comprehensive coverage of large areas at frequent time intervals and can continuously monitor land, ocean and atmosphere.News Source : The Times of India [India's best Newspaper]
