Masiha battles bad health as birthday nears Friday, December 14, 2001

RAJKOT: As she inches towards her 20th birthday this Saturday, life is not a bed of roses any more for Masiha, one of the oldest lionesses in the country, at Rajkot zoo.

On Thursday she was administered glucose drip to ward off weakness due to old age, zoo superintendent M G Maradiya informed 'The Times of India'.

According to him, Masiha had stopped taking any solid food for the last three days, which had taken its toll on her health. The zoo superintendent said that two 500 ML bottles of glucose were administered to Masiha after she was brought into the 'squeeze' cage.

Last month, Masiha had to be given vitamin injections when she went on a day's 'hunger strike'.

Maradiya expressed the hope that the lioness would recover soon. Masiha was born on December 15, 1981. She has, till date, given birth to two cubs. She was brought to Rajkot zoo from Sakarbaugh in Junagadh on February 23, 1992.

There are two other lions in Rajkot zoo which are 18 years old, Maradiya said.
