Major faculties go unrepresented Thursday, December 13, 2001
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
VADODARA: Results of MSU senate polls for the professors' category proved a major disappointment for some big faculties.
None of the candidates from the major faculties of arts and commerce made it to the apex body of the university following Tuesday's election.
Three candidates were in fray from the faculty of arts while one candidate had filed nomination from the faculty of commerce. In all, 12 candidates had filed nominations for five seats in the category. Candidates from smaller faculties like science, medicine, home science and management were instead elected to the senate.
Minu Patel from the department of surgery of the Baroda Medical College was declared elected with the highest number of votes. Patel polled 156 votes despite the fact that he is a new entrant in university politics. Insiders said that Patel had managed to convince voters cutting across rival factions in the university.
Prof Nikhil Desai from the faculty of science won on the second place with 99 votes followed by Bhuvan Parekh from the faculty of technology and engineering who polled 94 votes. Prof Prerna Mohite from the faculty of home science and Prof Kiran Joshi from the faculty of management studies were elected with 85 and 70 votes respectively.
It was for the first time in 17 years that polls were held for all the five seats. Earlier, a couple of candidates always made it to the body uncontested.News Source : The Times of India [India's best Newspaper]
