Course for small business consultants opened at EDI Tuesday, December 4, 2001

AHMEDABAD: A three-month national programme titled 'Certificate Course to Develop Rural and Small Business Consultants' was inaugurated at Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI) on Monday. The programme, which will continue till February 22, 2002, is sponsored by Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI). The chief guest for the inaugural function was Harsh Kaul, General Manager, SIDBI. Through this progrmme, EDI aims at developing a cadre of development consultants and equipping them with skills that are critical for the functioning of NGOs and the execution of income generation, and economic development programmes. These trained consultants would provide necessary professional advice and support in various ways to ensure an upsurge in the economic development. The trained consultants would give a boost to the development of rural and small industries and clusters, streamline the operations of NGOs, assist donor agencies with regards to assessing capabilities of NGOs, appraising their proposals, carrying out project monitoring and evaluation, and also help individual entrepreneur in small business counselling. This programme has 25 participants who were selected (out of 60) by conducting behavioural tests. These participants represent 12 states of the country, namely Manipur, Uttranchal, Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Chattisgarh, Assam and Rajasthan.

Dafer gangman nabbed, confesses to murder Tuesday, December 4, 2001

AHMEDABAD: After investigations into repeated incidents of murder and dacoity of highway-truck drivers, the Ahmedabad district rural police arrested Dafer Lari Kalu of the infamous 'Dafer' gang, known for their modus operandi of luring truckers by having one of them dress up as girl. The police acted on a tip-off and nabbed Kalu from Sabar hotel at Sarkhej. In his interrogations, he confessed that the murder and theft of a trucker at Makarba in October and later at Chharodi, was committed by the same gang. Sub-inspector from the local crime branch, Dharmendrasinh Chauhan told TNN that the gang had struck at Sarkhej, Sanathal and Chharodi villages in Ahmedabad district and were active in Surendranagar. They would have a member dress up as a girl and flash a light before the truck. When the truck would halt, the gangsters would drag the truck driver and the cleaner into the bushes, gag and kill them and steal their valuables and belongings. Kalu also confessed to being involved in many such crimes of loot and murder along with other notorious Dafers. The police learnt that members of one such gang had escaped from police custody and were now on the run. A state-wide combing had begun to track down these offenders. Rioting: The police lobbed 12 teargas shells in the Gheekanta area when two groups resorted to stone-throwing after an argument between two boys. Gaurav Vaghela (18) lodged a complaint at the Karanj police station stating that when he was riding his bike at Panchsheri, he was intercepted by Ganesh alias Guglo, who rebuked and abused him for speeding. Later this turned into a fight between Ganesh and Gaurav's uncle Mukeshbhai. After a round of fisticuffs, the two faced each other with their supporting groups and resorted to stone-throwing and the police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the mob.

Vadodara police chief shifted Tuesday, December 4, 2001

AHMEDABAD: In a much-awaited move, the state government promoted three IPS officers and transferred eight to fill vacancies in the top posts in the police department on Monday. The border district of Banaskantha got a new superintendent of police with additional superintendent of police (Kutch) Himanshu Bhatt being posted here in place of R B Brahmbhatt who was transferred a month ago. Deputy commissioner of police of Rajkot city, Narsimha N Komar, was posted as superintendent of police, Valsad, in place of Hasmukh Patel who left for Kosovo on deputation in the UN peace-keeping mission. At Porbandar, whose SP Neerja Gotru Rao also left for the same assignment, the new SP is S Pandian Rajkumar who was DCP (zone 2) in Ahmedabad. Vadodara Police Commissioner J Mahapatra was promoted and posted as Additional DG (Police reforms) in Gandhinagar in place of Hiralal who retired on Friday. Mahapatra will hand over charge to the special Inspector General of Police of Vadodara Range, Deepak Swaroop, who will remain in charge till a permanent posting of a new CP is done. Special IG (Armed units) D D Tuteja was promoted as Additional DG and posted as director security and chief vigilance officer, GEB in Vadodara. Special IG (Surat range) N K Bhandari was promoted and posted as Additional DG, State crime records bureau-cum police computer centre in place of H C Solanki who was posted as director of prosecution. Deputy Commissioner of Police (south), Vadodara city R V Jotangia was posted as superintendent of police, Narmada district. Despite these transfers, two very important posts remain vacant _ that of Special IG (Border range) and DCP (crime) Ahmedabad after G S Malik also left for the year-long Kosovo mission.

Drunken man kills self, 2 of family Tuesday, December 4, 2001

AHMEDABAD: In a bizarre incident on Sunday, a drunken man set himself, his wife and two daughters on fire killing all, except his two year old daughter, who is battling for life at the LG hospital. Khemji Viraji Thakore who worked at a petroleum factory in the Ajay estate at Rakhial, used to have frequent fights with his wife Manjula over his drinking habit. According to his wife's dying testimony, Khemji who lived in a room on the terrace of the petroleum factory, returned home stone drunk around 2 a.m. on Sunday and woke up Manjula demanding to know why she rebuked him over his habit. This led to a fight and he poured kerosene over her, his daughters Poonam (5) and Bodi (2) and then on himself and lighted a match stick. All of them were taken to the LG hospital where Manjula succumbed to severe burns in the afternoon, followed by Poonam. Khemji died on Monday morning. An offence was lodged at the Rakhial police station after a complaint was lodged by Manjula who told the police that she used to nag him about his drinking. Three killed in mishap: Three persons were killed and four injured in Gandhinagar when the rickshaw they were travelling in, was hit by a trailer on Monday near the Gh-7 circle. The driver of the trailer (GJ-1 VV 9761) Fazlu Rehman Mehmoodbhai Shaikh from Rajasthan was booked for culpable homicide at the Sector 21 police station. The dead are: Bhartiben Ashokbhai Vaghela, Jankunwarba Jagdishsinh Dabhi from Pethapur and a man aged around 40 years.

Hearing of anticipatory bail pleas postponed (B J Medical college) Tuesday, December 4, 2001

AHMEDABAD: The hearing of the anticipatory bail pleas moved by four students of the B J Medical college booked under attempt to murder has been postponed till Tuesday. Additional sessions judge J D Vyas, directed the neurosurgeon of the Civil hospital to file a detailed medical report of the two injured students who were beaten up by the accused. He observed that the students who were beaten up, were still admitted in the hospital and the available report pertaining to their health was an interim one. Police cracked down on rioting students at the B J Medical College, Ahmedabad, on November 27 night and registered a case of attempt to murder against eight students. They took action after four students were severely beaten up and hospitalised. One of them, Ashish Gamit, has received serious head injuries and was brought to the Civil hospital bleeding profusely.
