Modi dedicates power plant to the state Sunday, December 2, 2001

SOURCE - TIMES NEWS NETWORK
SURAT: Stressing for onward integration of several agencies, both in private and in public, for optimum utilisation of power generated at reduced cost of production, Chief Minister Narendra Modi termed the completion of 156 MW power plant of Gujarat State Energy Generation Limited (GSEG) at Hazira in a record time of 17 months an exemplary one, while dedicating the same to the people of the state on Saturday at Hazira.

Lauding the efforts of all concerned, for completion of this gas-based project at Mora Village in Hazira, Modi said people in general have lost faith that such projects could be completed within the given time frame. He added the power plant of the GSEG could be a trend-setter not just for the state, but for the entire country, as it also proved how a combination of efficiency factors could effectively be merged to translate concepts into reality.

The natural gas-based combined cycle project, which can also run on liquid fuel, has been developed at a cost Rs 576 crore with an installed capacity of 156.1 MW.

Earlier speaking on the occasion, Union minister of state for energy Jaywantiben Mehta stressed for a comprehensive approach to fulfil the power demand of the people of the state and said the GSEG's power plant at Hazira would be a step in this direction.

Union minister of textiles and city, Kashiram Rana lauded the efforts of the state government and said that the industries in this region would benefit a lot from the completion of this project.

Those who addressed the gathering included minister of energy Kaushik Patel, minister for energy Bavkubhai Undhad and managing director GSEG D J Pandian.

Official sources said while Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd (GSPC) holds 26 per cent equity in the company, GEB, GIPCL, GPCL and GIIC have confirmed equity participation, it takes total equity from state sector companies to more than 51 per cent, according to official sources. Further, central public sector undertakings like KRIBHCO and GAIL have also taken equity in the company of 25 and 12 per cent respectively, sources added.

The GSEG project comprises two gas turbines of 52 MW each, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine of 52 MW. Being a gas-based power plant, it is environment friendly and it has also signed a power purchase agreement with GEB for sale of power from the plant. M/s Steag Encoteg of Germany would be looking after the operation and maintenance of the plant, official sources informed.

Rajkot citizens shy away from paying house tax Sunday, December 2, 2001

SOURCE - TIMES NEWS NETWORK
RAJKOT: When it comes to clamouring for better civic amenities, Rajkotians are most vocal and very often succeed in driving home the message to the authorities concerned.

At the same time, when it is time to clear the house tax bill, they develop cold feet!

Statistics released by the tax department on Friday show that almost 1,500 tax payers have not paid their house tax for the last 10 years while another 5,000 have not cleared the dues for the last five years.

As a result of non-payment of taxes, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation is perennially in the red and has been forced to shelve many development works in the city and curtail maintenance of many roads and other civic amenities.

Tax department sources told 'The Times of India' that had these defaulters paid their taxes in time, the civic body would have been able to show a surplus of Rs 25 crore rather than being in the red.

The most intriguing aspect is that a small number of tax payers owe huge amounts and most of them are politically well connected.

Another interesting aspect that has come to light is that there are around two lakh tax payers of whom just 2000 clear the bill in time.
